Through an agreement with the Bureau of Land Management, PRBO Conservation Science had a number of objectives relating to the Le Conte’s thrasher (LCTH), a species of special concern in the State of California. The objectives were as follows:

• Collect baseline data
• Describe and refine knowledge of spatial distribution of Le Conte’s thrasher throughout the Monument
• Develop and test appropriate monitoring protocols for this species
• Collect information on habitat associations and key habitat features within the Monument
• Develop an online data-entry site to allow for the systematic collection, sharing and analysis of population data over the long-term

As a result, a habitat suitability model was tested and refined with over 50 LCTH sighted. Plant species and vegetation requirements were identified that were important for territory occupation, cover and nesting. Monitoring protocols were developed for use by citizen scientists for long-term monitoring of the species. In addition a Le Conte’s thrasher project page was developed as part of PRBO’s Avian Knowledge Network and the California Avian Data Center as a repository for observation data on the Le Conte’s thrasher.
